Okay so you're setting up your Valheim server, going through the configs, you've set everything up and turn it on - you see your server on the server browser, click join and.....

Well it looks like you've somehow banned yourself from your own server, and your friends can't join either... how odd. Interestingly this is a VERY easy scenario you get yourself into, and thankfully you can get out of it fairly easily.

How to...

Unless you've actually been banned (and well done on that one - it must be rough having to ban yourself from your own server), this is generally caused by the use of the "Permitted Players" section within the Valheim server config - and generally means you've filled it out incorrectly.

The "Permitted Players" section is effectively a whitelist - only players whos ID matches that of the players within the list will be allowed to join the server - otherwise they'll get the message we see above. Within the directory where your save file is kept for the server ("Saves" for Southnode users) you will find the following file:

permittedlist.txt

If there is ANYTHING in that list, the whitelist will be active, and any SteamID64 that doesn't exist within that file will not be allowed to join the server.

Additionally you have another file which does the opposite:

bannedlist.txt

Wherein any SteamID64 within that file will not be allowed to join the server, but anyone else will be allowed (assuming that you have nothing in the permittedlist.txt file).

We recommend setting a strong password, and only sharing this strong password with friends - a good time for a reminder that a server password must be more than 5 alpha-numeric characters (a-Z and 0-9) and not be related to the name of the server, world or save name!
